Utilities during a long property move
Hi All,
We've just bought our first home and it's just down the street from our existing rented accommodation. We've got about a 3 week overlap between when we complete (October 31) and when have to be out of the rented accommodation (November 19). With two small kids and one medium sized car, we;re planning on using this overlap. As we move we'll be using gas and electric at both places, how would this work? My current deal with EDF is transferable to the new property and is much cheaper than whatever the deemed tariff might be at the new property. From my research this is how I see things going, please correct me if I'm wrong:
1. ASAP, contact current supplier (EDF) of rented accommodation and tell them we'd like them to be our supplier at new property with current tariff. Give them a move date of November 19.
2. On completion day, we should get a meter reading at new property and contact current supplier of new property. We will have to set up an account with them.
3. On last day in rented accommodation, we supply landlord and EDF with a final reading from rented accommodation.
3. Wait for EDF (supplier at rented accommodation) to do whatever they have to do to become our supplier at the purchased property (about 21 days).
4. On switch day, we supply EDF with reading from our new home.
5. Receive and pay final bill from old supplier at purchased property.
Have I missed anything critical out? It seems unlikely, and I'd probably have to ring them, but is it conceivable that I could get our current good rate at both places during the switchover?
Any help, much appreciated.
Regards,
Sam

You have the gist of it correct, however a switch generally takes 5-8 weeks to complete, I'd be astonished if it happened in 21 days.
Now, if the current supplier at the property is edf there is a chance you could get the tariff at both properties (although if it's a tariff that's no longer on the market I think they would only let you have it "once").
If it's not edf, you will have to be with the incumbent supplier from the date you take ownership of the new property, until such time as the transfer is completed. This will probably include a standing charge, even if you use no energy.0
