HI,
I just bought the same DVD recorder recently and the only thing I can think of is that he has it on his AV channel on his tv and when he presses record you then can't move the channels up and down and will only be able to watch / record the same one.
If he presses the channel button on the tv, it should work as the tv normally would whilst the DVD is recording in the background on the AV channel (or what ever channel you have programmed it into)
You can, without recording, move the channels up and down on the DVD remote, but as soon as you press record, you have to use the tv remote to watch the other channels
Hope this helps****************************0 -

just a thought, i suspect like the £99 Alba VD recorder from Argos that this only has one scart connection and hence is only a single tuner - to watch a different channel from the one you are recording you'll need a twin tuner!
in fact forget it and buy this http://http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0607656519.1117999542@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdgaddekmkffjjcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&sku=324200&category_oid=-21030&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null this is absolutley stunning and save a hundred quid into the bargain! :money:0 -

Doesn't this unit also have only a single, analogue, tuner?
I think it's likely that the cause of stationairy's problem is a dodgy bit of plumbing with the cables at the back, or, more likely and as Alison suggests, a bit of finger trouble.
How is the aerial connected from the DVD recorder to the TV? Is it only via SCART or have you used the loop-through on the back of the DVD recorder to feed the co-ax cable (that's the normal TV aerial wire) out of the back of the DVD recorder and into the socket on the back of the TV? If this co-ax is in place then your TV is definitely capable of viewing other channels (provided this was possible before you bought the DVD recorder).
If the TV and DVD recorder are connected via SCART, it is possible that the TV is taking command signals from the DVD recorder and automatically switching to AV as Alison suggests.
Hope that helps, JoshM0
