Internal doors

Options
Dont know as this is money-saving as such, more looking for advice. I want to replace all my internal doors. All bar one to those georgian type with the panels. One of them I want to have 15 glazed panels in. I've looked in B&Q, Wickes etc and I am guessing that all the big DIY stores have the same supplier. Is there anywhere else I should be looking or is a door a door wherever you go?

Hi, I too have been looking for new internal doors the B&Q doors all look very poor quality. I suppose they will be okay if you intend to paint them as you will be able to fill them, but for nicer quality doors I am thinking of using http://www.doorwarehouse.co.uk/doors-interior.php

I hve fitted doors from the DIY sheds.

TBH they are OK but from experience I would have a good look at each door you intend to buy.

One set of french doors I bought had a huge knot on a bottom corner. Unfortunately I didn't check this out, and when I tried to fit a concealed bolt on this corner and the whole corner disintegrated.

B and Q did take them back and replace them with a higher priced door at no extra cost to me. The manager even gave me 20% off a planer that I needed to buy.

The 2nd pair that I eventually fitted were great. The customer took me up on my suggesion to fit a bead on the slave door to give him a rebate. This meant that you couldn't see daylight between the two doors. when they were closed. He was very pleased with them. He waxed them after I left and when I went back to do another job they looked absolutely great.

Fitting quality door furniture really helps the appearance of any door.

Thanks, but that penultimate paragragh might as well be in Greek. Bead? Slave door?

I replaced my ground floor doors with the 15 panel frosted glass ones - got mine from Focus.
Also have replaced all the doors in a house I am renovating with solid 4 panel doors.
For both, I just bought the cheapest pine doors I could find. If the workmanship on the doors isn't perfect it only takes a few minutes with filler and sand paper to make them look OK.

Finally, I would really recommend using Ronseal brushing wax on this type of door, it looks really good and if you get it on the glass panels, it just wipes off !

I'm going to have to have the white ones I'm afraid, otherwise it means I will have to remove years' worth of white gloss from the rest of the woodwork in the house.

Bead or beading is a term given to a length of profiled wood used for decorative or trim purposes. I fitted a piece of this of a rectangular profile approx 8mm thick and 25mm wide on the slave door, with half of the width overhanging the edge to form a rebate for the master door to close onto.

Slave door is the term given to the door that is usually opened last on a set of french doors. The master door will be opened first and closed last. The slave door is opened (if at all) last and closed first. With some sets of french doors the slave door will act as the unhinged side of a door frame.

Hope all your confusion is cleared up ;)

 I looked for the closest match to the doors I just bought and thwy are pretty expensive.

I've just bought some beautiful oak, 6 panel Georgian style doors from Howdens for £70+VAT. They are supposed to be around £100+VAT but we're pretty reliable trade for Howdens and can knock them down a fair bit. I think you need an account but you only need to tell them you're doing a property up for sale and they should be fine. Most people have a Howdens nearby, I think.

They do much more simple doors than the oak ones as well, ours will be waxed up as it would be a crime to paint them.
