Whole market brokers source from products which pay them commission. If you appoint a broker on an independent basis, you pay a fee and any commission is rebated to you to offset the fee and direct to lender products can be sourced and recommended, but you would have to arrange the mortgage directly with the lender.

Assuming you decide to go the whole market route, look at direct-only lenders/products yourself, so you get a view of everything open to you.

  • I used Which? Mortgage a few months ago. Really really good. Was using London and Country and dealing with a very aggressive lady advisor and had to tell her in the end to stop bossing me around!

Does the whole market broker help with arranging the mortgage then?

Yes. The service is usually "advice and arrangement" which means once your circumstances have been established, the broker will find the best product and lender for your circumstances and complete the submission, obtain necessary documentation and look after everything until completion takes place.
