Why do the gas/electric companies charge different unit rates for different regions?

Different areas are maintained by different distribution companies who pass on their costs to the suppliers. As the suppliers get charged different costs by area they then pass that on.

In general it costs more to operate and maintain the networks in areas like the highlands which is why such areas see higher rates.
