Its charged back to your insurance company.
I cant see it being registered as a 'claim' in the same way as claiming for say a score down your car would be a claim, but i'm sure its logged on your record
(See threads in the insurance forum where people have come unstuck by not disclosing glass repairs and getting a shock when the insurer comes back at them for not disclosing.)0 -
A "claim" is a "claim", and any claim goes on your history.

There are varying grades of claim and thats my point. If i claim for a new windscreen its not going to impact my premium in the same way as claiming for rolling my car down a motorway would0 -
Im pretty sure its nit just a matter of applying resin on w chip. If its a perfect bulbus chip with no crack then you can just fill up the crater. If its a star with cracks the area will need to be tapped out so tge crack ends are rounded off so they dobt extebd.
I have 3 chips on my windscreen and decided to leave them as repairing all 3 will cost 3 times if paying out of pocket. All 3 were from before I bought tge car do insurance probably wont cover it0 -
My policy says "windscreens/windows excess (reduced to £25 if window is repaired) £65"
Now does that mean, if I get this repaired through my Insurer, even if the company they use decide to charge £76 (or more), I only pay £25 excess?
With the downside that I will probably pay more on renewal as it counts as a claim (of whatever calibre)?
I would consider a local repairer, but I don't like to lie and if I had the repair done I would feel obliged to disclose it. So doesn't that make the Insurer's repair the cheaper?
By the way, thanks for all the replies, it helps to talk it through!0 -
Never had a chipped windscreen so I can't help, but I just wanted to post to congratulate you on your thread title :T0

No-one would be lying if they did repairs to chips themselves at their own cost rather than made an insurance claim.
But if you want to claim, then your excess is all you will pay.
You will be in the hands of the repairer - their decision to repair or replace will prevail!
Do dummy quotes online with and without the claim in your history to see what the difference in the premium is.0 -

I've made a claim before, had to pay £25 excess to have the chip repaired. When buying my new insurance I was informed that I had to declare it but it made no impact on the insurance premiums on all the quotes I ran.
I think it is so small that they don't charge extra but it would be an easy way to invalidate your insurance if you don't declare it.0 -
£76 to repair a chip. what is your glass excess? I just checked mine and amazingly it's £75. Apart from bargain basement, legal only car cover, do you get insurance where your screen isn't covered? Recheck your policy.
Incidentally, the important part of fixing a chip properly, is cleaning the surrounding area and vacuuming it. The resin then does the job properly with no moisture to delaminate the screen at a later date.0 -

I would love to see them trying to make that stick if you went to the insurance onbudsman.0
