I have an Asus its only 14 months old. It wont charge unless I plug the adaptor in on a certain angle, stand it on its side (so the adaptor is on the floor) and put a heavy book on the other end of the laptop ti weigh it down.
Does it sound like a problem with the laptop or the charger? I don't want to buy a new charger if it is the laptop thats faulty.

The "Fault" is that either the charger cable is broken, or the connector inside the laptop is broken.
This is normally caused by the cable being pulled out by the wire instead of by the connector, the cable being bent at a tight angle or being too tight.
It's not a warranty fault.
If you can find someone with the same laptop, then try their charger in yours, and try your charger in theirs. That should tell you fairly quickly where the issue lies.
If you don't know someone with the same laptop, then take it to your local computer repair shop (not one of the big warehouses) and ask them to check it - they should be able to tell you which part has the problem. If it's the cable, then you'll just need a new charger. If it's the connector inside the computer, then you'll need to get it fixed which can be > £501. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0
