Toilet Doesn't Flush Very Well ? ? ?

Hello
I was wondering if there is anything I can try before I call a plumber.
My downstairs loo doesn't flush very well - it does flush but not wonderfully well and there is a knack to it (which is a bit of an embarrasment when you have a visitor!)
Is there anything I can try to do myself or is it a job for the plumber?
Thank you!

It sounds like the syphon is on it's way out!
It is not hard to change it, but can seem difficult if you have never done it before.
How to do it can be found here- http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/toilets.htm
But it's not the best description in the world and is lacking some photo's.0
