I have a friend who does the same job as the OP. I agree that it was right for the OP to stay put, but sometimes there is a need for the next call to be done on time if it's for medication such as diabetes. Yes, that should be for the employer to sort out, but I just wanted to flag that it isn't always cut and dried.

Well this is the whole problem with the system, there's no contingency built in for when things don't go to plan, which happens a lot when you're caring for poorly elderly people.

Being a bit late wouldn't be an issue for most people with diabetes anyway, even time sensitive medications usually have a 'window' when they can be given.

you did absolutely the right thing - I would never leave someone once I had called a 999 ambulance - sort of implies that the ambulance wasn';t really needed..

If ever I need care, please let it be someone like you.

I agree with advice to join a union and to keep a log although I bet you don't get much time to do anything like that.

    Bless you.

You did your job which I assume is a carer role, last I heard that role was somewhat predicated on actually CARING - granted that doesn't fit into some care companies ideas of good practice. I'm sure your next client would have been more than willing to have you be late if they knew the reasons. Whoever was in the office though needs to be reported to someone higher up, that attitude is shocking.

Is this a private care company?

Sounds like a horribly stessful job, OP. You don't have control over what's going to happen or not happen and you're answerable to a clueless manager (been there, got the t-shirt!)
  • Was it your boss who was on the phone or an office worker? If it was the boss then you do have a problem. If not, I'd ask for clarification from the boss how this sort of thing should be handled in the future. It would be pretty bad for their reputation to leave a vulnerable client alone waiting for an ambulance and I think I'd point this out (and horrendous for you as a person too).

Well done for standing up and being counted. You might feel stressed now but looking at this in the future you will never regret what you did.

Yes it is a private company, there is only 3 office staff and 20 carers. This person is the co-ordinator. I will never regret staying it was the right thing to do and I would never leave someone even if it cost me my job.

Goes against every moral fibre in me to leave someone in distress. There has been two other incidents that have shocked me about this company that are highly inappropriate for people who are responsible for the well being of the vulnerable.

There is a lot of unhappiness amongst the carers and people leaving all the time, new staff unhappy with the organisation of the place. Older staff that have just had enough...
