Need to buy new car but know very little about them!

Hi,

I am in the market for a new car as my mondeo is knackered. I have never had my own car before, just driving others and am eligible for a motability vehicle but i am confused with all the jargon.

I like the look of the vauxhall insignia but there are 10 different trims?!

Anyway i just need the most basic one which i think is called design based on prices but i am now confused by the different engines and what they mean as i am struggling to find out on the vauxhall website.

For example, the engine 1.4i VVT Turbo (140PS) Start/Stop is £1349 and i have always thought a 1.4 is a relatively small engine and the 2.0CDTi (120PS) ecoFLEX Start/Stop is alarger engine yet it is cheaper at £399.

Also what does PS mean?

120 Ps = 118 BHP
140 ps = 138 BHP

What you need to understand is the ratio of power/weight BHP/1000Kg

The Motability costs are a bit like a car lease - you never own the vehicle. So it's feasible that an engine which will retain its longer-term value better will have lower costs under the scheme. (Especially with a car like Vauxhall Insignia which has astronomical depreciation).

You should be able to find many good cars with no advance payments.

The VVT are petrol models, the 1.8 is a non turbo petrol (heavy on fuel) , the 1.4 is a turbo petrol.

The CDTi models are diesel, more economical and better suited to a heavy car like the Insignia. For the extra £100 it's worth going for the 2.0CDTi 140PS Stop/Start.

The trim levels are as follows ES, Exclusiv, SE, Elite, SRi, SRi VX Line and VXR.

The ES and Exclusiv are basic models.
The SRi, SRi VX Line and VXR are sporty models.
The SE, Elite are the mid/luxury trim levels.
