Oh Shorty - I do know how you are feeling - I remember it well. ((BIG HUG))
I am so glad you are looking at getting a second opinion. When Molly first became ill, she too went down hill so quickly, within a week she lost sooo much weight I really thought that was it.
Turns out it was the Thyroid issue a lot of older cats get. She had a tumour that was attached to the thyroid gland in her neck. Because of this, she started to over produce Thyroxin. This caused her food to be "disposed" before it had been digested correctly, so although she was eating, she was getting no nutrients at all, hence the rapid weight loss.
I have everything crossed that it can be resolved quickly and relatively painlessly for you all, especially with everything else going on too xx0 -
I am very glad to hear that you are going to try and get some tests or a second opinion. You may be right in your in initial suggestion that it is just his time.....or not! If you don't make this extra effort i think you will be left feeling very unhappy about the way it has all ended.
FWIW, none of my cats have ever had GA for a blood test....in fact vets often ask me to hold the cat while he takes the test in front of me and it takes seconds.0 -
None of my cats had to be under GA for blood tests.. Very strange.
Hope you get all sorted for the best possible outcomexxx0 -
Evening all, I didn't want to post this earlier - working in an all bloke office I didn't want to well up..
Mr Shortie took Pip back today to get bloods done, however during the check up the vet found a heap of lumps around his abdomen and discovered that he's totally blocked up (and here was me thinking he was simply being clean and going outside)
The vet suggested it was 'his time' and that she believes it is cancer (which backs up the first suspicions). She gave Pip a painkiller to get him through tonight in comfort so that we can allow the kids to say their goodbyes.
The poor guy apparently didn't bat an eye lid when he was being examined, but I've noticed a certain vacancy in his eyes he last two nights.
He's booked in for tomorrow morning, kids are going to a friend's house when we're at the vets and we'll have a roaring fire going for him to sleep infront of tonight regardless if how warm or cold the house actually is

On reflection though I'm so glad we got the second opinion as I may have akways had a doubt that it was the right thing to do, and guilt is an awful thing to carry around. At least this way we can go into tomorrow knowing that actually, thus definately is the right thing to do, and we just have to deal with the sadness, not sadness with guilt added in for good measure

So sorry to hear that. I think as a pet owner you 'just know' when the time has come. It's the most awful thing having to let go, but it really is the last favour you an do for your pets when there is no turning back the clock.0

Hope you all had a lovely night together last night, and that today's gone as well as it could.
Definitely sounds like it was his time to go, so well done for putting him first at such a difficult time.
Thinking of you all.0 -
Really feel for you, we lost one of ours 6 months ago after a month long illness which we never got to the bottom of. It was horrible watching him deteriorate daiy before our eyes, but it brought me a little peace seeing how relaxed he was, finally after he had gone. We still have our down days and miss him terribly, but we can now laugh about h funny antics over his life. Gut wrenching dropping his brother off today for a procedure at the vets, brings all those emotions back.0

Thanks all xx. I got home from work last night and he was on another planet bless him (the painkiller?) Hardly moved all night, we fed him some tuna as a treat and he enjoyed it but kept falling asleep on it.. His breathing had slowed right down and I told the kids to say their final goodbyes as he looked unlikely to make it through the night
We left him on the dog bed infront of some burning embers on the fire and covered him with an old towel to snooze
He was gone when we woke up this morning - glad I forewarned the kids in the end. In my head I prefer that he passed at home in relative comfort by the fire instead of a jab
Thanks again for all the support, with so much else going on it's been fab. Thank you all so much xxxApril 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -
Oh bless him Shortie

Best way to go though, I suppose, at home with a belly full of tuna
Hope you're all OK xx0
