motability - what can you haggle on?

Hi,

I am looking to get my first motability car and know little about cars and models. I have read some threads on what you can try and haggle for but they are all a few years old. Any advice on what you can realistically haggle in recent times - the advance payment? extras?

I am looking at the vauxhall insignia, just the basic model which i think is called design. Also what is the difference between the different trims and why is it so difficult to find out the differences between them as the vauxhall site just states the trim, engine and price.

We have haggled successfully with Ford (20% off advance) and this time VW
(30% off advance payment - currently waiting for a Tiguan).

Vauxhall has given max.£100 off in the past and their dealership has given bad experiences.
You really need to get a few test drives in the Insignia and others - some look great on paper but are practically difficult.

As pstuart says you need to try all these cars before signing up as the brochures always show enormous interior space in the pictures but different in real day to day use.
Most dealers have a dedicated motability specialist salesperson who although still wanting to sell you their make of car should have an excellent knowledge of pros and cons for a particular version depending on your own disability.
Regarding haggling you should be able to have the dealer lower the "upfront payment" for many of the cars which should get you a higher spec version of the same car for a lower upfront payment.

You do realise that your DLA award will be up for renewal on or after October 2015?

    +1 for test drives.
The brochure photographers were recruited from estate agents....
  • Hi,

well the DLA is actually for my younger brother, who had it renewed in 2011 for a long-term period ( i think 10 years)

I am going to go down to a couple of dealers and have a look at the cars and see if i can get a test drive, maybe negotiate something them with and then try another round of dealerships putting to them what i have been offered previously.

I intend to haggle on the advance payment (although i am not very good at it and lack confidence!) Just so i get this straight, and sorry for sounding stupid, but what is more likely that i can negotiate a lower 'advance payment' or negotiate to receive a higher spec model for the same price - if that makes sense?

Also, what other 'extras's can i ask to be thrown in generally?

Yes, the national reviews will start in October 2015 and could go on to late 2018.

Your younger brother has DLA and you are getting the car, not for yourself surely? Is your brother under 16?

For a child under 16, the parent or guardian is responsible to their child not the elder brother.

If he is over 16, it doesn't matter if he had a review in 2011 and it was awarded for the next 60 years, his DLA award will come to an end at any time from October 2015. He will then have to re-qualify under PIP which was set up intentionally to remove 20% of all current DLA awardees off DLA altogether.

It's just a heads up warning that the 3 year lease may come to an end earlier than the normal 3 years - it could be in 2 years time.
