roof lantern for kitchen extension

Hi,
We're planning a roughly 4x5m kitchen extension and were planning to have a pitched roof, but our architect has advised that a flat roof with a lantern would look better. Hadn't really considered before, but having googled they look brilliant and would add an interesting feature.

Anyone have any experience of them?

And presumably it wouldn't add much to the cost as while you have the cost of the lantern this would be offset by not needing velux windows and a flat roof being cheaper than pitched. Would that be correct?

In theory, yes. I don't see why not. A 1 x 1.5m lantern is about £1200 from the company I looked at. That would offset. There is a bit more work to be done on the joists, depending on which way around the lantern goes but the price differntial between the two won't be big.

I would get some quotes for both options, depending on the quality of the flat roof, they aren't always cheaper to build

I'd agree with that as well. There are many differentials, each job isn't the same. Even on the original planned roof, if you need handmade clay tiles on a roof as oppose to bog standard concrete then there's a difference in price to compare to the flat roof/lantern option.

I'm not sure that makes the sense I want it to! Essentially, it's specification to specification that you have to compare.
