Fluorescent Lighting

My neighbour has this light fitting in bathroom and it flickers when turned on at night time, but OT says said that the flickering cannot be seen during day time.

Does anyone know if there is light fitting that does not flicker at night time as this light fitting give him headaches and stop him getting to sleep at night time.

Flickering is often a sign it is on its way out. As a replacement is about £3 it seems worth trying this first.

It has just been put in recently by adaptation people, of course it would be worth trying to do a replacement, but it is not as simple as that as my neighbour is disabled and cannot change the light in the ceiling of course he would pay for the replacement. Also the adaptation people have to do other changes but the OT said the light is not a problem as she cannot see it flickering when she called to him during day time. His bathroom got a big window and is very bright during the day time.

I was with him when OT was with him and I was distressed when the OT compared her bathroom to my neighbours surely that is not correct and they should not judge disabled people placed to their own. :T

If light is flickering it needs to be replaced. We have a number of these fitments in our property and they are very easy to change. Pull old one out and push new one in.

You could complaint to "the adaption people". Does your neighbour know of anyone who could change it for him?

PS: They give off a harsh light and ought to be covered with a diffuser.

Thanks for help, it does have a cover on it and is screwed on with light fitting with about 6 screws. Hr lives is shelter accommodation and all elderly people. It would be dangerous for anyone of them get up on a chair and do it for him. The adaption OT said it is OK but it was day time when she saw it. It affects him at night time when it is dark and the light is turned on and it flickers and very noticeable. :T

Why can't he just switch it off?

28w is very bright for a bathroom (equivalent of at least 125w in old money). As mentioned above, replacements are cheap, but get a decent branded one for a steady light, the one listed in your link appears to be a cheap version and might well give a poor light. Several reviews mention early failure.

I had a Thorn branded one in an exterior bulkhead light and it didn't appear to flicker and they lasted for years.

I believe that sometimes it is the starter motor which is going on the blink. Is the whole fitting new or just the tube?

Please be advised: With this D shaped flourescent light the starter motor is integral with the fluorescent tube.

My mother lives in sheltered accommodation, where there is a caretaker who carries out odd jobs for the residents.

No one, young or old, should climb on a chair to change a light bulb.

Did you used to work for HSE? I've frequently used a chair and I'm still here but then I'm fairly tall so I can reach easily.
