The first thing that you need to do is get the amount of savings sorted out.
You need to telephone them and ask how they have worked out that you have over £16000.
if you have over £16000 then you are not entitled to the income based part of your ESA claim for your wife but you are still entitled to the contribution based ESA in your name.
If you have between £6000 and £16000 in savings then for every £250 (and part of) over £6000 they will assume that you are getting an income of £1 per week and this will be deducted from any income based ESA that tops up your contribution based amount. (Hope you are still with me ) )
Basically telephone them and sort out the savings. Then if you are below the £16000 limit ask them to assess you for income based ESA. If you are eligible for any income based top up for your wife then you would be entitled to Support for Mortgage Interest.
It is not a matter of choosing which one to be on it is a matter of whether you are eligible.0

You can only make a joint claim if you have less than £16000 in savings.
If you can't make a joint claim then you have to make a single claim in your name because you are the one who is entitled to contribution based ESA. That is because of the NI contributions that you have paid. Savings do not affect contribution based ESA at all.
If you want to make a joint claim (ie add your wife) then this part of the claim for your wife is income based (because your wife has not paid the necessary NI contributions) and is not paid if you have over £16000.
If you have over £16000 then you have to make a single claim for yourself - contribution based ESA.
If you have under £16000 you can make a joint claim - contribution based for you and an income based 'top up' (more money) for your wife.0

Got a letter this morning saying the following hope it makes sence to you all
Living expenses for you and your partner £0.00
Extra money because you are in the support group £34.80
Which gives you a income related amount £34.80
No income will be taken of your ESA
so your income related amount is £34.80
however because you are entitled to CB of ESA we will pay you £106.50
also it says i'm entitled to the Christmas bonus.
so does this meen i can get SMI as it looks as if i get both.0
