Yellow Sticker Madness

I've seen that there's a thread about yellow sticker shopping but didn't think my post fitted in with that - sorry if this isn't the correct place

My local Ts was crazy at the veg reduced section today. I've been whoopsie-aware for a few years now, and have definitely noticed a change in behaviour/etiquette in this last year

It really was a sight to see, they price things up in a staff area and bring them all out at once and around 20 people literally dived in, shoving and pushing each other out of the way

It was so bad, like feeding time at the zoo or something. Onlookers were pretty amused and one person was videoing it

I'm not being derogatory about yellow sticker shopping - I frequently do it myself and there is no shame in it at all. But this is ridiculous!

I'm not sure I'll be bothering there again - partly because I'm not sure I'll get anything unless I'm willing to come out with 2 black eyes, and partly because I'm not sure I want to associate myself with that kind of behaviour

Catching some bargains is one thing, shoving someone across a shop for the sake of a lettuce is another!

Am I being a snob here? Or is this just a step too far?

(did manage to get some muffins for the freezer for 10p once the cake crowd had dispersed :))

  • I've witnessed similar behaviour in Tesco.

One incident, was with a large woman literally shoving an elderly gentleman out of the way so hard that he nearly fell over.

They have the cameras and the security staff but they don't seem to care. Quite frankly, people who behave like this should be banned from the store.

It shows just how hard times are for some. I doubt that any of the people involved were Tory MPs or bankers.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Everybody loves a bargain but I to have witnessed this and it's not nice. I love yellow sticker shopping and use to do it quite regularly when I could, but our local supermarket puts everything in one shelf unit at the end of the chilled section there is normally one or 2 sales people putting the stuff on it/reducing it further and there's loads of people round them/blocking them in it must be awful for the sales people, I certainly wouldnt like it, when I see it like this I just carry on walking past. I know lots of people are struggling and some people need the reduced food more than others but it really annoys me is that only 2 people get everything! Why can't the supermarket just reduce the various items and leave them in the section they came from, so that more people benefit, I know i'm looking at it from a customers point of view and the supermarkets wouldnt listen!

Funny my mum commentated on this just a couple of days ago. She had been into tescos and she said there was around 20 people all swarming around the yellow sticker guy, to the point he couldn't move. Then when someone else came out they all swarmed around them and followed them around. My Mum said it was terrible to see! Sign of the times!

  • I do find Tesco the worst for this happening. I have been in there a couple of times over the last few weeks on a Sunday afternoon. Went in yesterday, the lady was marking down the fruit, there were about 20 tubs of those fresh mixed fruit things they do on the counter as the lady is marking them down, I noticed they all said 10p, I picked one up and this old lady more or less shouted at me, to say 'that's mine!' there were two ladies standing waiting for her to mark them further down from 10p, they had their hands on all of them. I do think when it is a case like this, there is enough for everyone, but hey ho. I came away without anything reduced, but did use a few coupons, so £10 off my shopping that way. :)

I've noticed that tesco, in particular, seem to be marking down their already reduced items, down to pennies - much more so than they ever did.

One of the staff told me that they they now take stuff into a different aisle to reduce it, which allows them to get on with putting stickers on everything without people handing them piles of stuff asking when they're going to be further reduced.

I've witnessed the scramble at the bakery when those goods are reduced down before close of store and it seems to have become a bit of entertainment for some, standing back to watch the melee.

I've also seen a couple come in with one large & one small trolley, scoop everything into the large trolley & take it to another aisle to go through exactly what they want & then they left what they didn't want in the small trolley in the aisle.

You do have to wonder how much of this 'bargain' stuff is wasted though. You see people with piles and piles of stuff in their trollies and although some it of can be frozen - like meat, bread, veg - a lot of it can't and you can't help but think that people are just buying it because it's cheap and then it just sits in their fridge and gets binned anyway.

Some people buy YS because its has a YS on them. I saw someone buying 30 avocados the other week and wondering how many of these will be binned as I have tried to freeze avocado flesh and it goes brown and it looks very unpleasant to look at..

    More fool them.
