how about a jag x type 2.2d. Faster than the mondeo equivalent. standard 150hp 8.5 0-60 and possibly 50+ mpg .real world about 45
?
I had one it was seriously fast and luxurious.
some are available for around 2k ish0 -
How about a VW Polo GT TDi 130 or the Seat or Skoda equivalent?
Not many Polo GTs about as they were only available 2005/6, quite quick and torquey as standard, but remapped to about 150 they can be good fun and still good for 50mpg. You might struggle to get a good one for less than £3k though.
The Golf GT has the same engine but is tamer and less frugal due to the extra size and weight. You could say it's more civilized.Never trust a financial institution.

mkiv golf GT TDI 150 cheap as chips to buy, not so bad on tax and fuel consumption would be better than what he gets now. can pick one up for £1500.00 there abouts. with a tweak of the ECU and fuel pump and turbo have been seen to get upto 170+ BHP.
130 BHP version tend to hold prices higher than the 150.0 -

This is what i done. I thought about the Golf PD150 and Bora with the same engine. Preffered the Polo with the PD130 engine due to being lighter and better on fuel and almost just as fast.
I realised the Fabia VRS and Ibiza were more or less the same car mechanically, and opted for an Ibiza FR TDi instead. Quick for a diesel, good fuel, easy to tune and a lot cheaper than a Polo variation. All your base are belong to us.0 -
I personally couldn't drop to a Polo. It's too small. It'd feel like driving a boys car.
Have read negatives about the Golf 150 - reliability issues. From what i've read, the 130 is more reliable.0
