rear seatbelts - MOT failure?

upholsters wont be cheaper! than scrappy or salvage ones.
you can have them re upholstered i.e the whole material reaplaced in the reel with the clip stop this will pass mot, but you cant cut out the damaged section or have a patched stitched in or over the damage.0 -

Stick to getting some second hand ones, or remove the seats entirely (you'll likely get a strongly worded advisory though
)
It is not a repair, it is a replacement of a worn out component. And done properly wouldn't be obvious, and would be just as safe as the original (something you can't guarantee with a second hand one).0 -

That would depend on the upholsterer.
Who said anything about patching the belt. It is actually easier for them just to replace the fabric. They would all carry a stock of seat belt fabric in various colours anyway.0 -
hours labor £45.00 there abouts higher in some places then materials ontop then VAT I don't think it would be cheaper.Jamie_Carter wrote: »That would depend on the upholsterer.

was actually clarifying why it wouldn't be a mot pass as supposed to fitting a new material to a reel. was actually helping your comment about upholsters being able to do this job and it pass MOT not slamming your comment. but wont bother next time.0 -
Hi, thanks for all advice, have ordered two for £50 off of a breaker on ebay so all going well will be sorted well in time for MOT, thanks again

Why would an upholsterer repair a seat belt? It's a safety component that more often than not now has electrical connections for seat-belt warning gongs and lights as well as cabling for airbag circuits and pyrotechnics. As much chance your local baker baking you some fresh tyres.0

I have seen them repaired well not repaired but reupholstered for different color and fabric nylon style done in a 06 audi. the upholsterer has no issue doing the job aslong as they have the necessary equipment like vagcom, to turn the system off before removal, its a pricey job.0 -
Op check if you can replace the seatbelt. They're not likely to be easy and will probably requiree you to take out all the seats, wall linings etc to get access to the anchor points where the seatbelt connect. Then you will need to have the right tools to remove and replace them.
Also anyone actually answered OPs question as to whether frayed belts are an automatic fail? seatbelts are pretty tough stuff and should still be very strong even if it's frayed - unless the MOT guideline were set to leave no leeway what so ever with this (understandable)./
There is a powerlifter that I used to follow called Mark Rippetoe, and he used car set belts as lifting straps for years and years, the same straps used to lift several thousasds repetions of 300kg+ deadlifts. They're virtually indestructible.0 -
So how do people get around this legally.. I know some people who don't use their back seats other than storage ( speakers or whatever) and don't have seatbelts?
It's a bit of a pain as I don't even have passengers. I will need them soon as i'm due a baby in March but til then such a pain to have to fork out for something I don't NEED just now.
I hate cars!!
if the car was not fitted with seatbelts then it's Ok. but if it had and have been removed then you need to have them fitted and working. Same applies with all things cars.0 -
My dog munched seatbelt was a fail, even though she'd not got that far through it. Because it was such a small tear I thought I'd get away with it, but I had to replace it to pass the mot.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0
