Christmas Day!

Honestly I don't understand why we're all so obsessed with it must be a roast on Christmas day..... I'd far rather have something else freshly cooked on the day than a nuked meal -if it's not traditional....so what

MY OH has suggested going to Wetherspoons on Christmas Day (small problem is that work have not yet confirmed who is working Christmas day- we're a 365 operation although having worked the last 6 for a few hours I'm thinking of saying no
) and to be honest I'm thinking-why not. The price is really good much better than other local places and a roast is just a roast when all is said and done ..... I'm thinking have an early lunch -work afterwards if I absolutely have to-then have a buffet spread of everyone's favourites to pick over in the evening.
My ideal Christmas day would be to simply have a big breakfast of bagels and smoked salmon .......picky bits in the day as a buffet and salt beef sandwiches in the evening. Yum. OH and my son would both be horrified at no turkey though LOL
Wiggywoo do what makes YOU happy ....not what you feel you *should* be doing. This last year has surely shown you that you can't please everyone so you may as well do what makes you and your son happy. If that's a traditional roast.....you've had some great suggestions....if it is something else....Go for it !!

We're going out to lunch on Christmas day but my inlaws have booked and are paying for it so they've chosen the venue but I'd be more than happy with a Wetherspoons, I love their food! We were taken out at work the other week to some hugely expensive gastro pub in London and their food wasn't a patch on Spoons' Mexican Burger
We've been out a couple of times at Christmas before, once to a Chef and Brewer pub and once to a Harvester and, to be honest, the service wasn't brilliant in either despite the inflated prices because the staff are all itching to get home to have their own Christmas with their family. I don't think Wetherspoons could do any worse!Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -
Quite honestly I think going out for Christmas lunch is like going out on Mothers Day or Valentines....... Most of the staff would rather not be working and most places are so booked they can't cope and service is usually pretty naff.
I used to work for Wetherspoons so I know exactly what to expect and I don't believe a local hotel which charges three and four times more would be three or four times better...and at least I know the Spoons kitchens have standards !!I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

This is exactly why we always choose an Indian restaurant for Christmas lunch. The guys there don't celebrate Christmas but they always make a real effort and we have a great time.
I reckon the full works (welcome drink, poppadums, choice of starter, choice of main, rice, nan, dessert, coffee) for twenty quid is a good deal anytime, but on Christmas day it is exceptional. Especially as we can take our own alcohol. There is a turkey and Xmas pud option if you want it, but we always go with the Indian celebration dishes.0 -
I haven't read all the replies, so sorry if I missed something.
But I would say - stuff the family if they are a problem.
I also agree make your own traditions... Get up, have luxurius croissants, go for wonder, have hot wine and hot chocolate somewhere, go home and make LO turkey twizlers or whatever it is they like and get yourself a roast dinner restaurant collection or something similar from M&S!!
I am assuming as you were considering taxis that you can spoil yourself a little.
Families are always difficult... OH and I either spend christmas just the 2 of us together (if away), or with his parents just the 4 of us. Which is most of the time.. My MIL cooks (fantastic cook) and I help and then we play games and watch a bit of TV and drink (OH and I mainly:-)) and then we go home.
None of us like turkey, so this year it is proper fillet steak. With all the trimmings. We like the trimmings:-)
Even though OH has a sibling and I have 2, arguments who were what with whom had meant that we no longer split attention to/from someone equally. We visit others on other days over the festive period, but the actual dinner is with my in laws.
And if we get a single sibling (like my brother was before now) I know he is always welcomed to my in laws too. They like him and 1 extra person doesn't weigh on the resources (:D) MIL is now a bit older, I wouldn't her to expect to cook dinner for 12!! My OH would have to do that:rotfl:)0 -
You can get those ready cooked rotisserie chickens from Tesco - get one on Xmas eve let it cool and put it in the fridge - you can have it cold on Christmas Day with gravy on...... Lovely
then just do side dishes in the halogen or in the microwave (think you can buy quite a lot of chilled side dishes these days that heat up in the microwave) Our first baby due 25th May 2014 :T

I'm sure you will have a lovely christmas OP

I am stealing some of the ideas off here as it will just be me and pooch this year. One step closer to crazy dog lady!!0 -
Christmas day dinner should be YOUR favourite meal- Traditions are what you make them - and if you and son would rather have fish fingers and chips - then have them! the point though, I rather think, is to 'treat' yourself with a luxury meal you wouldn't normally splash out on!!
tbh, a roast dinner is NOT my ideal meal - I would much prefer a nice steak and chips - but the family want the trad Christmas dinner.0
