I got a laptop since July running Windows 8
just done the following 2 updates
Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2883201)
Installation date: 27/10/2013 09:32
Installation status: Succeeded
Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2885699)
Installation date: 27/10/2013 09:31
Installation status: Succeeded
I cant see any changes, I thought the new 8.1 was to introduce the Start button again, but no sign on home page or desktop view ( I have restarted machine twice)
any advice welcome

I think update KB2885699 is the one that will bring up a notification, but it seems it will wait for a Monday to do it.
From: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2885699The notification is displayed according to a schedule and is not displayed immediately after you install this update. After you install this update, the notification is typically displayed the first time that you unlock or log on to the computer after 8:00 P.M. local time on Mondays.
It is essential in the sense that you will have to upgrade sooner or later if you want to stay on a supported version, but you have 2 years to do it.0
