I will inbox you vinyl and will help you get your windows update back0 -
he said windows xp pro, my advice gave the correct info so please don't be stating that my replies are nonsense :lipsrsealThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Why did you assume 64 bit though? Just because it was Pro? 64 bit XP was so devoid of drivers that it was rarely installed and a mainstream PC bought from a retailer would have had 32 bit as standard even buying through business channels.
a habit of mine, because regardless what of what xp he is running 32/64 if he reinstalled without service pack 3 *which we know he did* it is guaranteed he will run into this error, because it is a common problem after a reinstall of xp you cant get the windows update to work, because the reinstall disk holds an older version of the windows update and you need the new windows up date to receive windows update updates, if this makes sense, typical microsoft problem* and because he reinstalled he will not have the newer version and i have been fixing this problem for months now, and until Vinyl replies to my inbox i cant help him.
I would need further information anyway and i have inboxed him if he still requires my help0 -
Let me point out to you that my advice was not nonsense!! i think you need to check your facts before saying i am in the wrong with the advice i gave, i gave advice for him having winxp pro as this is what he stated in the heading that he had
"Can't install Service Pack 3 on XP Professional",
I gave no information regarding his CPU, he said windows xp pro, my advice gave the correct info so please don't be stating that my replies are nonsense :lipsrseal
Yeah the only thing wrong with your reply was the bit where you talked total !!!!!!!!. Sadly that started with the crazy assumption at the beginning of your post, and it never really recovered from that.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

Really? ok then well i dont need to answer to you Robert, unless you point out exactly where you think i have went wrong!
you know your life must be so bad that you talk down to someone online, or butt into the conversation that is not even relevant to you or that you have even posted on the thread to begin with...what exactly have i done to you Robert that has got your back up?
If you know the answer to this thread then i'd love to hear from you to see where i am going wrong0 -

What you did wrong was the assumption that the OP was running the 64-bit version of Windows XP. Highly unlikely to say the very least.
What got my back up was your initial response to NiftyDigits. Seems like you're a lot better at acting like an !!! yourself than you are at taking it on the chin when someone responds in kind.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

Saying i spoke nonsense was not talking in kind, Ok i assumed wrong that it was a 64bit, but then you should know that my information still stands correct regarding the updates, and this is likely his problem as he had sp3 installed before the reinstall, regardless of it being 32 or 64 i would have got further information when i had spoken with vinyl in inbox to which i only replied to him tonight, I do not need you talking to me like i am an idiot, you are all slating me on an assumption i made, and not one of you have stated why, so why is that? and have any of you really tried to make the effort to help this guy out? without telling him that he needs to buy memory or upgrade his windows, well not everyone can do this and have to make with what they have, so are you going to praise me for the correct information i have given or keep slating me for the wrong assumption i made? i see you are all way to quick to comment on that and nothing to help with what the original thread is really about, i feel bad for the guy, making a thread and all these comments come about, i can fix this problem regardless but if you and nifty think that you can to then feel free to jump on in and tell him how to fix it without telling him to basically buy a new pc..because as of now im done here, Good luck!!0 -
Saying i<snip>
to save you digging a deeper hole for yourself......
Hmmmm... I was wondering whether to comment....
I mentioned in post #9 that I understood the problem....and it is not what you think it may be.
You think the problem is with the version of Windows Updates, but if that were the case, the standalone would install.
Remember this part of the OP's post?:I searched through windows help and found out how to manually download and install SP3
I downloaded it and ran the installation and guess what? It failed and I got an error code which I'm afraid I didn't note down
So why would having an old version of Windows Updates affect the standalone install?
I'm not trying to embarrass you, but since you mentioned my name and asked if I could solve the issue, I think that it is appropriate to reply.
This issue in this case is the Compaq Presario PC in question has an AMD Processor.
SP3 pushes out an Intel power management driver that often causes a problem wiith the installation.
There is a simple fix. Just install SP37394 before applying the update.
More info here
But I went beyond that to offer the OP options to prevent this occurrence in the future.
So, there you are.
My reference to nonsense, was your assumption that the machine was running XP Professional 64 bit and advising the OP as to that without even a cursory check.0 -
Whenever I've had a problem installing sp3 I've done it in safemode with networking.0

There is no service pack three for a 64bit windows xp, you are running a 64bit which means that sp2 is the latest service pack and you are fully uptodate, you will receive support and updates for sp2 until April 8, 2014 then microsoft will no longer support windows xp
hope this helps
I can also tell you that now you have reinstalled you will probably be having problems using the windows update, where the green bar just scrolls and scrolls if this is the case let me know and i will try and help if need be
Agreed!
i am using windows 7 but still in love with windows XP0
