Help... Has Anyone Ever Been To The Queen's Garden Party?

I need to know what to wear! I have had the invitation and it says that the Ladies should wear a dress/ trouser suit with a hat but what type of dress does this mean?
I would like to get one which I can wear again, (:money: !) but I do also want to look suitably formal and not too casual.
Any help would be gratefully recieved!

    Go to Jaeger... !!!

For this Weather... getting warmer.. you can wear a nice loose floaty dress with a jacket and a Hat.

You can wear basically what you would wear to the Races. Check out Debenhams.. how old are you?

I'm 31. I haven't EVER worn a jacket before so I would feel really grown up!
Debenhams is a good plan, I might have a look in there tomorrow. Thanks!

  • mum and dad went a few years ago, mum wore a long sleeveless dress, quite simple looking, kind of thing you would wear to church or a wedding or a posh dinner. She hired a hat, again, just something fairly plain & simple. she didn't bother with a jacket as it was really hot & sunny the day they went.

Dad just wore a suit. Its so much easier for blokes! :D

agree with above my mum and dad went a number of years ago, and they wore what you would wear to a very posh wedding.

knee length shift dress or similar with a hat would be fine, and then a jacket if its cooler. You could easily wear that again.

If you didnt want a hat you could always get some of these feathery headress band things that are everywhere at the moment. That would be fine. My mum said a few ladies had those on.

If you are meeting the Queen never wear anything above the knee or too low cut! Hats are usually a must as let's face it the Queen always wears one! After you have met her you can take it off. When you meet her you are supposed to wear gloves if you shake her hand! Go to Debrettes website to find out the proper protocol! Most importantly feel comfortable. Remember that the garden party does exactly what it says on the tin so very high heels can be a no no as you sink into the grass. If it rains you will be brought inside. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of waiting around!

Most importantly enjoy it!! It is an honour to be there but remember cameras are usualy forbidden. Handbags I would suggest a shoulder bag as juggling a clutch bag, curtseying and being cool do not go together!! Enjoy!!

Ps yes I have been to Buck House.

You don't have to curtsey, but the gesture is appreciated by HM. ;)

My friend went last year, she wore a smart dress, hat and a wrap (think smart wedding)

She said the people who actually got to meet or shake the queens hand were all aware of this in advance, (special people connected to charities etc) and were bought forward to the front. The rest that were there, and there were a lot, sort of have to form a kind of line either side and the queen walks down the centre. As far as I know she didnt stop the shake anyones hand, only the pre arranged people. She then enters the marquee with the crown on top and you can enter the other tea tents for food. My friend did not have to wear gloves, or curtsey. She was sent a pretty comprehensive list of instructions and does and donts before hand so she knew exactly what to do/wear.
She said the cakes are absolutely divine.
