I've been looking at the rakes to day and decided to wait and chat to groomers on them. They talk a lot about thinning undercoat, which sounds like would leave in my in similar mess to fulminator?

By all means talk to your groomer if you like.

I find rake completely different to furminator - and I have used both.

With furminator, Zara's fur was awful, it was very sharp, like a razor and it was literally ripping her fur to pieces so stopped using it.

Rake - it is not sharp at all. There is nothing sharp on/in the rake. It just gets dead fur out without damaging the fur that should stay on the dog bu brushing it out not cuttng it/breaking it like furminator did.

Rake does not damage Zara's fur at all.

Frugalista. I have pmed you. Probably still have a coat change, but he's un neutered. I've been told it might all settle down in six moths, and that if I neuter I might get three times the amount or it might all thin out.

Mason and Pearson going o be dug out to try as I know I have one. First rule of money saving should I suppose be to try what you have already,
  • Invest in some cowboy magic detangler - it is used for horses but is the best thing ever at removing matts and tangles. Apply it and then brush through the matt, it take a small amount of time to work out completely but you will get there. Works a treat on my fully coated Afghan!

If you don't already have one, also buy a pin brush, depending on his coat you may want one with longer pins rather than shorter ones so it has more chance to get through the coat. This will work much better than a slicker or bristle brush with the knots and tangles and help you to identify them.

By the sounds of it he is changing from puppy coat to adult coat, I have no experience of terrier breed but afghans go through the same thing and they just become a ball of matts if you aren't careful. Bath him weekly with shampoo and conditioner (give your human shampoo a go and see how it works - dog shampoos IMO are over priced and rubbish!) and brush him through thoroughly after each bath making sure there are no knots. The important thing is to keep brushing regularly to make sure you are removing the old coat that is falling out rather than it getting tangled in amongst the existing coat.

He is nothing so hard as an afghan, promise!

I have had the honour of brushing out afghans many a time and his coat is minuscule in comparison. His long bits are just a few inches long, lol!, its the curl that causes the issue!

Tried cowboy magic first of all on his first coat...but not in this current coat.

I too have an afghan. He is changing from puppy coat to adult and it's a nightmare. I groom him and, no joking, 20 minutes later he has knots. He doesn't particularly like being groomed so that doesn't help.

Me and OH have had afghans in the past and I don't remember any of them having such a nightmare coat. I just hope his adult coat is ok.

I have heard about Cowboy Magic but never used but I think I will buy some.

I agree about human shampoo and conditioner. They seem to work much better on afghans than dog shampoo

It's a detangling spray costing around £14 a bottle .

My sister sells Avon and I just use their kids detangling spray. She lets me know when it's on offer and I get a few in then - around the £2 mark :money:.

I figure if it's safe for small children then it will be fine for my dogs "knickers", etc.

We tend to have horsey stuff in for clients who want particular products ;).
  • The other thing I have found particularly great is the Johnsons leave in baby detangler conditioner (and it reduces the time in the bath which is even better :) ). They do a detangling spray too but I didn't get on with that, found it worked fine at removing the matts but matts seemed to magically reappear in the same place!

    Good luck!
