  • Knit a sample square first, measure and compare to size in pattern. You can always unravel it afterwards....

The best way to work out which wool is suitable for a pattern is to look at the finished size.

Does the pattern give a size for the width of the back of the garment, either written or in a diagram? If so you can use this to work out the wool to use and the finished size.

So say the finished item would be 20 cms wide and the wool you wanted to use says 20 stitches per 10 cms on the ball band. This means that you would need to knit 40 sts to make the garment 20 cms wide. If your pattern then says cast on 59 sts you know that if you did cast on 59 rather than 40 sts your garment is going to be a lot bigger. Some yarns also stretch slightly so may have some ease, yarns like cotton has no ease at all and cannot be stretched to be made to fit so the yarn you use also makes a difference.

So I would look at the width of the garment and then how many stitches you need to cast on with the original wool in the pattern. You can then work out how many stitches would make up 10 cms in the original wool. Use this number to buy the new wool.

I hope this all makes sense as it is not easy to describe when typing.

Thanks everyone, I just knit it anyway as the baby not born yet. It has turned out fine, around 16 inch chest. Just finishing off the button bands now.
