Motor Insurance NCB

In Jan 2012 my partner insured his bike with Bennetts so in Jan 2013 he accumulated 1 years NCB, however in September 2012 he took out a different policy with a different insurer on a different bike, so in September 2013 he accumulated 1 years NCB with that insurer.

Can he combine these NCB to make 2 years no claims? Swintons are kicking up a fuss about it and have basically been making life difficult from day 1 (saying they haven't received documents etc etc when they have been sent).

Thanks.

  • January to September doesn't sound like a year to me so it sounds like Swinton is right this time.

Not that I would use Swinton for my insurances!
  • No, They're two different policies. One started in January 2012, the other (with a different insurer) started in September 2012.
  • And both policies started with 0 No claims. So he has built up two 1 years no claims. Does that make sense?

2 policies with 1 years NCB. I doubt they will combine them especially as they overlap.

Choose which one you want to use.

Swinton will be making much more than a fuss if he said he had 2 years ncd.

    He only has one.

At least expect a premium increase plus admin fee if he claimed 2.
  • He specifically asked them before he took the insurance out if he could combine his two 1 years no claims certificates to become 2 years no claims and they said he could. During this conversation the insurance company checked the database for one of his no claims as he couldn't find the certificate for it, which they found and applied. He sent the other certificate through post and when they "didn't receive it" they called and told him they will charge him extra as he hasn't supplied his no claims bonus. When he explained the situation they said they couldn't combine them both. They're not charging an admin fee, only the difference between one years and two years no claims.

In that case he needs to make a formal complaint to them about this and ask them to listen to the phone call, and ask for a transcript. If he is unhappy with their response he can escalate to the FOS (at no cost) for their adjudication.

As you will have gathered from the replies, this offer to combine NCD is not normal, and next time someone makes a deal over the phone to your advantage like this ask them to confirm it in writing.

With Swinton's that is not the case. Having been fined a few million by the FCA for mis-selling due to trying to maximise commission I am sure that the thought of enhanced commission or bonuses never entered the head of the freshly trained person selling the product.

    And pigs might fly.

You seem very anti notswinton. Asking for the notswinton rep to come and face the music in another thread and now this.

But people in glass houses and all that.

Swinton haven't been caught out on mse and across the net posing as a satisfied customer extolling the virtues of their brokers, unlike some other broker we know, eh, weejonnie? (We won't forget the double act of sarni and irnbru in a long time)
