Funny Noise

On a long journey recently, my car started making a strange noise, sort of a whirring, vibrating noise from the front left of the car, the noise happens regardless of engine speed and even when its in neutral, but ONLY when the car is moving. Given this problem I thought it was the transmission, and the mechanics at Mr Clutch thought it was a gearbox bearing when I explained the symptoms (though they did not examine the car). However, I examined the car today and found that the front anti roll bar has become detached on the left side, which may coincide with a loud clank I heard sortly before the problem started. My question is: could a loose anti roll bar cause strange noises such as I described, or is it still likely to be the gearbox?

What a well maintained car it must be.

A loose antiroll bar will vibrate against the bodywork.
