Argos - are they just telling me a load of rubbish?

Hi all
I am sitting here fuming. We bought a bed and sofa from Argos. They rang me on Wednesday to arrange delivery for Friday. I was given a delivery slot of 2.30 - 4.30pm so I left work early to wait in.
It got to 4.45pm and no delivery so I rang Argos. They said their delivery vehicle had broken down so no delivery was going to be made and they would rearrange delivery for Saturday morning.
So again we waited in and again it got to 12noon Saturday and no delivery. I rang Argos and they told me that the delivery had been cancelled and they couldnt tell me any more!! They also said 3 delivery vehicles broke down yesterday. I insisted on speaking to a supervisor who then told me that the goods are now out of stock. Apparently when the items were taken back to the warehouse last night they were booked back into the stock system and have now been allocated to someone else.
The best they can offer is to deliver the bed and sofa on 22 November - thats 4 weeks time. I am currently waiting for a manager to try and find some stock from somewhere and ring me back.
I find it really hard to believe that they would take goods from a broken down delivery vehicle and manage to allocate it to someone elses order. I am told that this was not an error - it is standard procedure.
The question I should have asked is that if my delivery was on a lorry that broke down yesterday afternoon and then had to be taken back to a warehouse - how would they have time to arrange delivery of my goods to a different customer today?
What do you think? Am I being told a load of lies here? Does anyone know what the procedures are at Argos or have you experienced something similar? Any advice would be great.

Seems strange, but i suggest you send an email to terry.duddy@homeretailgroup.com explaining all this, but if they have already allocated to someone else then you will need to wait for new stock, but their exec office will more than likely offer you some discount or vouchers0

Did you receive acceptance of your order (their t&c's will state what constitutes acceptance)?
MSE's failed delivery article may be of interesting reading for you also. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Brilliant, thank you earthstorm. I will wait until their customer service department closes today - on the off-chance that someone rings me back with a satisfactory delivery date.
I am so annoyed because our old sofa is sitting in the garden waiting to be collected to go to the rubbish dump and we wouldnt have moved it out if we had known this was going to happen.0 -

i would say this is acceptance by ArgosYORKSHIRELASS wrote: »They rang me on Wednesday to arrange delivery for Friday. I was given a delivery slot of 2.30 - 4.30pm so I left work early to wait in.
as Argos Direct works this way.
1) you will have order confirmation
2) they will call you to confirm the delivery date and time slot
3) about 1hr before it arrives the delivery crew will call you with a more accurate time of delivery.
although sometimes when we have ordered from them we never get the 1hr call, but it always arrived within the time slot0 -

Well if they've sent the goods, its almost undoubted that acceptance has occurred (its been a while since I checked but I'm sure Argos are a acceptance upon dispatch company - T&C's can dictate when a contract is formed). But the reason I said to check T&C's is because it wont be the same for every transaction OP has and its good to get into the practice of checking at least the relevant T&C's when entering into an agreement. You keep using that word.
