Windows 8 updates failing to configure

I am using an HP laptop windows 8 and for the past couple of weeks windows updates have been failing. They have installed but then when the message configuring updates appears it runs for a while and then the message failure to configure, reverting changes appears. I have restored to an earlier date and reinstalled McAfee, but the problem still persists. I have about 20 updates now that have failed. Any ideas.

did the windows 8 come with the hp laptop pre-installed?

Did you look in settings, event viewer logs?

It did come pre installed and its been working perfectly for about a year. I am now getting error code Ox 8000000a so I think I will now try a clean reboot to try and isolate it. Thanks for your reply bluesnake. I'll post the result if I am successful as other users may be experiencing the same problem.
