One squirt of Fairy Liquid in the washing up bowl, and that's it, put it away! If the suds run out and the water goes grey, run a fresh bowl of hot water with I can't help with the sponge thing, I use a brush for the dishwashing, and a microfiber cloth for the sink with bleach - the cloths can go in the washing machine, and last for a while - hmmm, starts thinking, when did I last buy one?

Hi- I thought microfibre cloths were supposed to be used dry or with water- surely using bleach with it ruins the microfbre?
  • For most washing up I use the dish-washer, making sure it's full (but not overloaded) before use. Any large items that would take up excessive space or really mucky ones get hand washed If you have to rinse off suds you're using too much. The suds don't help to get the dirt off, they are just an indication of excess, but having said that, you do need a little to ensure you do have enough 'soap' in the bowl.
Clothes get washed at 30 degrees unless really dirty or for things like nappies etc. The dishwasher is also on the lowest setting that works - test the different programmes until you find the lowest one that's reliable.

OH usually does the washing up round ours, because I cook. For some reason he can't manage to get the glasses sparkly clean, there's always these horrid marks of some kind on them. If ever I do the washing up they come up sparkly clean with no marks.

He says he does the glasses first, in the hottest water before anything else has gone into the bowl, just the same as I do. And I've tried to spy on him and can't see anything obvious he's got wrong, there's no putting them in with the frying pan or anything. But still this keeps happening. Do any of you know what he's doing?!

sounds like he is just swishing them rather than actually washing them.. I loathe dirty glasses.. if they are tall glasses he might not be able to get his big man hands in to clean them properly.. I know my OH couldn't get his hand in to clean a glass.

Hmm, he may well be, I do wipe them all over with the sponge so it could be that. He'll be able to get into at least some of them so I'll try instructing to actually scrub them!
  • I'm a person with many bad habits that I need to address, this being one of them.

I rinse off the bits of food and catch it in an old sieve which then gets emptied into the food bin. I wash glasses, cups, then plates, cutlery and the pans last. But I do tend to keep the water on! And I do tend to squirt the fairy on the sponge several times during the wash!!! eek!

  • to get your glasses clean dip the glass in the sink then pour a bit of salt onto the glass and scrub then rinse they look sparkling i have been doing this for years. Salt is also great for getting stains out of cups

  • Re the washing up.

We have a (400mm wide) dishwasher, but as there are now only myself and my wife, sometimes it goes for a few days before it is full.
When this happens, some stuff (eg breakfast cereals) can be so hard the d/w can't deal with it (unless you use the stuff that takes all the pattern off the crockery!).

I now wash such items by hand the same day, using the kettle and not the tap, as our sink is a long way from the HW cylinder, so to fill the small 'half' sink is wasteful.
I now know when to stop filling the kettle so that after it boils and switches off, I can fill it full. This results in the right amount at the right temperature to do this minimal amount of washing-up.

I sterilize sponge scrubby pads but putting them in the microwave for 10 secs whilst damp, cloths go in the wash.

    *shudder*

And just the thought of the sieve is making me feel very queasy!
    Better is good enough.
