Do I need a certified electrician?

Options
I read in another post that nowadays any work done in a house needs to be certified?

I have a friend who is a very competent DIYer and has done electical jobs for me for years and I was going to get them to fit me some extra electric sockets and fit an electric shower.

Does this mean that they cannot do it for me??

I am running on a very tight budget and cannot afford to get in an electrical company to do it?

Any advise please...I'm panicing!

Good evening: The work described by you could require notification under Part P Building regs eg. new electric shower (not a like for like replacement) is in a 'special location' therefore requires notification... the following links will provide you with more info...http://www.partp.co.uk/files/Part%20P%20of%20the%20Building%20Regulations%20-%20Explained%20Nov04.pdf

If you do a search on this forum you will find that Part P and electrical safety have been fiercely debated!

It depends where the sockets are being fitted. If they are to be fitted in the kitchen or bathroom then the work is notifyable. Otherwise, provided they do NOT entail work at the consumer unit, they are not. My guess is that they would be spurs taken off an existing ring main.

With regards to the shower, as Canucklehead above has mentioned, unless it is a like for like replacement then this would be notifyable.

Thanks for the informative replies....it's getting clearer now!

I have printed off all the guidelines form the official building regs site!

Can you please clarify something...... the kitchen and bathroom needs a certified electrician......does that mean elsewhere in the house is OK..eg extra sockets in the lounge, putting lights in the attic/loft and running electrics to the garage which is not far from the house?

    Thanks again

Oustide is covered by part P. So that's another area to get it certified.

It's really up to you ,2 scenarios

    1. Your dads mate does it all and you don't tell a soul.It doesn't get picked up in a survey when you sell and nobody dies / house doesn't burn down.

    2. This doesn't happen at all, or varying stages in between

I am suggesting to use a registered spark, most of the time there is a come back.

If something untoward were to happen you may be on a sticky wicket (no paperwork = not done to wiring regs = chance for insurance company to pass the buck) THIS IS UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN but I am trying to cheer you up :D

You pays your money you take your choice.

You should use a competent person for the work, links below

Also, my other half is an electrician, and you can pay around £80 to get the work checked and certified.

Please double check this though, it may just be his boss!
