Samsung Galaxy and Nexus problem

Yesterday my Samsung S3 mini started telling me I was running out of storage space. As I'd just tried to put some music onto the SD card using Isyncr I assumed that was the problem. However, this morning I checked my Nexus 7 and I'm getting the same message on this - despite not having downloaded anything new onto it. Also the battery life on my phone has decreased by about half.

Has anyone come else accross this problem or know how to solve it? I did try and look what files were on the phone, but when I try and use the file manager it crashes. Also I can't see the phone on my PC, but I assumed this was because it was my new laptop using Windows 8, but now I'm thinking it might be related. The phone is also running slowly.

Thanks for any help.

Have you backed your phone up to the google server previous to today ?
If so - try a restore (OTA) ...
Do you have a backup on your PC as an alternative ?
Do you have any vitally important data on your phone ?
Finally - try KIES - it doesn't let me update my phone - but allows back ups/restores !!
