You need to provide a bit more information about the way you have connected everything, but it does sound like a master/slave problem. When you connect two devices to the same IDE channel, one of them has to be master, and another - slave. This is normally achieved by changing jumper placement.0

You will need to change your jumper settings at the back of the HDD. I'm no expert but have a google and it shoyuld sort you out.
Or Can your machine accept a big HDD? You might need to check this too. I wanted a big HDD but the guy who built the machine told me not to go too high as it might be rejected so I added an 80 to my 40.0 -
Yes sounds like you using new drive is set as master without any operating system and it should be slave. Normally hd have infor like a sticker on them to tell you either set as master, slave or that other one (cant remember name now)
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
well.... ins answer to some questions....
shouldn't be too big (I really hope not anyway) - it's an 80gb added onto my 8gb
jumper placement??? is that how you fasten the IDE cables in the back?? or is it another cable entirely??
windows starts to load, but can't do it.... I can get into safe mode, but i don;t know what to do after that.....
do I change master/slave on the physical disk, or do I 'press del to enter setup' at the start???
oh I thought it'd be so easy - i just assumed plug 'n' play!! DUR!0 -

think i've located the problem..... cheers for the help - thought i'd lost 3 yrs worth of data/photos/music for a while!!!
Didn't get a booklet with my new HDD, so I think i'll just have to try trial and error with the slave/master jumper thingymabob0 -
thingymabobs are one thing, but when you have to start dealing with oojars, then you're scr*wed0

You have opened your PC to put a new HD in without backing up your photos - YOU ARE INSANE! See a doctor now, and dont do it again!
On a more serious not, you might have a problem - an 80Gb drive is over the 32Gb limit for some BIOSES (since you have an old 8Gb drive this might apply to yours)0 -

BIOS updates and address translation might help.0
