Hi all, I have the same issue and don't know what to do....I am on edf fixed energy that tuns out in march 2014.... It's cheapest on the market. If I move to edf's march 2015 fix... I pay 100 quid more a year... A 10% increase on what I pay now. If I move to the march 2017 fix...I pay 200 quid more a year... A 20%increase a year. What is best. Will prices of up again? Will these fixes still be about in march so I. Can have this winter on the lowest fix possible,,,?? Advice welcomed...

I would also like help with this please, I am on the fixed edf until April 2014 , so another 6 months, if I switch now I will be paying £144 more per yr on a 2015 fix. Oddly enough I am now not getting any edf tariffs in my comparison. I know Martin says if you have fixed price until jan then switch as will take 2months to go ahead, but I have 6 months.

To Kitch71. I know about the withdrawing of Dual Fuel and Direct Debit Discounts because I have changed my tariff today. They didn't offer the information - but when I asked about discounts they had no choice but admit there were none.

To randm. I too have the April 2014 tariff. Today I switched to the March 2017 Freeeeze tariff and although I signed up today it does not start until my 2014 ends in April. I will be paying an extra £120 for year (£10 per month). I reckon that £120 per year will be less than any increases over three years.

Just found this on their website. Our latest Blue tariffs do not include a 6% Direct Debit discount, but do offer a lower unit rate for Direct Debit customers. Paying this way is still cheaper because the unit rate is lower compared to paying by Cash.

    Do we believe this?
Yes, this is correct. But as Andy_WSM says it makes it even more confusing, not less. Now when you see a unit price it isn't just whether it includes the VAT you have to worry about - you now have to wonder whether it is before or after discounts.

Plus, of course, as it is a discount off only the unit price then this will be less than the previous discount which would have also reduced standing/tier 1 charges.

Additionally, as each new tariff is announced by EDF they also increase the standing charge for both gas and electricity. But they won't give an answer why.

Are you saying that I can sign up now but choose the start date for when my existing tariff ends, even though it will be in six months time? Is the just with edf as I am already with them or can I do it with any company. Fr some reason edf are not showing in my searches.
    And thank you for replying:)

randm - You can sign up today for a new tariff and it will start the day after your present tariff ends in April. And of course you will be protected against price rises.

I think you miss the point. The idea of having a unit rate for direct debit means it makes it clearer to compare the rate that you're paying against another supplier and also easier to quote against
  • Thanks to all for their replies (to me and others)

I confess I am as bewildered as I was before :-(

I returned to check more today to find Scot Power had raised its prices, so now if I leave it I go to a standard tariff which goes from a current £817pa to a whopping £1159pa (41.86% rise!)

The best I can get is a fix to March 2015 with EDF (= £996pa, a 21.9% rise on current)

Or a fix to NPower at £1156pa to Dec 2017
(but has no manage online facility which I find a bit bizarre)
(a rise of 41.49% on current)

Or £1165pa with EDF fixed to March 2017

I wish I knew what to do for the best, as I surely don't as of now :-(

These companies have us by the proverbial short and curlys don't they

What a good job we are all in this together
    (according to our politicians)

I rather suspect we are *not* all in this together

I had the same concern Joe but pulled the trigger today with EDF March 15. My deficit was -£59 compared to my SPJan14 but as that is running out in a few weeks and as you said the deal will take 4 to 8 weeks to complete. They will start billing you from the day they take over which will not be today but in 4-8 weeks time.

i have contacted edf to do as you say, get the switch to start when my old tariff ends in april, and they say they cannot do this, they can only do it for 3 months ahead. could you get back to me and let me know how you arranged this.
