Ebay Business. What do you put as occupation on car insurance?

So Ebay is full time job for me as self-employed with business. Car insurance due soon. I just wondered what to put when getting a quote? There doesn't seem to be an option for e-commerce and I am not really sure what my job title is? I put retailing for the work area and sales administrator for the job as I have no idea at all? Anyone have any ideas?

Just to add I buy goods at auction and then resell on Ebay. Fully registered as a business on Ebay and as sole trader with Inland Revenue.

  • You are a "trader" but I think you'll have to find something like "manager".

I have never found an easy answer to that, mine is even more complicated as my paid freelance work doesn't exist either on their database.

One tip though, avoid any use of the word 'dealer' or 'antique' I found to my cost it makes the premiums daft as they assume we are all carrying around £100000s of pounds worth of stock at all times in full view.

I tend now to phone and talk them through what I do and sort of let them suggest something on the basis that if I need to make a claim hopefully I can refer back to the recorded phone call if they dispute my occupation.

It does mean no cash back though for doing it online.

My renewals always came through without a problem until I told them I sold toys on eBay as a part time hobby. They put me down as Toy Trader and my existing firm wouldn't touch me. Found cover but it was a bit more expensive. Let them know you let people collect stuff from your house and see what your house insurers think to that...

Could be an idea to post up in the insurance section.

I take it you do this as a job? So you’re an onlineretailer. You buy from external sources, you sell to external sources…a middleman, like most shops. And you’re theonly person in it? Manager.

If you’ve not set up under a company name, putting managingdirector or executive may (or may not change) the premium. Trading names wouldprobably not be applicable but you would need to check.

I would go for retail and manager.

(I had the same thing this week. Had to set up publicliability insurance for the wife who paints wooden items and personalises them…butthere was nothing the same. Artistic painter and sculpture is what she fellunder in the end…as painting had to be included in the title due to the natureof the equipment).

I always put Sales Manager or General Manager. Don't call yourself a director, you're technically not allowed to unless the business is incorporated.

I would go with MD or CEO to add a little gravitas to proceedings.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Gone for manager and retail. Worried that being self-employed and using my car for business (never even used car for commuting when employed) would push my insurance up but its actually come down by £200!
