Forget Miami, the worlds cesspit IMHO. Go straight from NY to MIA, book into a nice hotel on Collins, possibly 4 seasons or similar. Do a 4 nighter cruise to Bahamas with NCL on the Sky. We have done this 3 times. You are right, it can be cheap as chips to go on a short 3-4 day cruise with NCL in an inside cabin. But if you really want an experience that would give you a taste of the high life, book an aft penthouse suite, complete with your own butler. Cost us around £1,300. Less than the price of the flights to get there
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

It's very hot and humid in July, but I think the hurricane season is more August - October:

The link takes you to a page that confirms hurricane season is from 1st June, although it peaks later. July is still officially within hurricane season and there is at least lots of rain.

I know a lot of people do go in July to Florida, but I think that's more down to school holidays rather than weather. I think it would be a good choice for a May holiday for example though.
