White Musk and The Body Shop

Sorry this is a bit long but I am a bit miffed and have been made to feel like I'm too old now to use my favourite perfume.:o

I have used White Musk from the Body Shop for over 20 years. I absolutely love it. Today I thought I would buy the White Musk body deodorant from an extended range that they launched a few months ago. I've only ever bought the perfume oil before as they never had an extended range before.

When I went this morning however I spoke to the shop assistant and told her that I thought the White Musk extended range they are now selling smells differently to the White Musk Oil they have been selling for years. She told me that it does smell different because they have repackaged it, used a different formula and have relaunched it because they have found that the majority of the young people don't like White Musk because the smell is too heavy so they have made it lighter.

Well apart from thinking that's a joke because I know White Musk has been going for at least 20 years so they must have already got the smell right and everyone I know loves it, can you just repackage and relaunch a fragrance under the same name even though it smells different? I didn't think you could.

So in effect they are selling two different fragrances, but using the same name for both of them!!

This would also explain why I bought their body cream from the extended range about a couple of months ago and when I got home I didn't like the smell but I just thought I couldn't smell very well at the time because I had a cold. What do you all think? Do you think it's right that they can relaunch the same name under a different packaging with a different smell to what it originally was? Surely as the smell is different they should give it a new name to stop people buying what they think is the original smell?

I understand what you are saying but with time comes change. When it comes down to it the body shop are there to make profit and if profit has fallen then they will try to change. Just because one person buys it on every month doesnt mean loads will.

I do however agree with you on the name. If it isnt the same they should change it or al least place information on the packaging that it is different. Or have a tester out so people can check.

Of course I don't expect them to keep producing a product just because a few people like it. I do however expect them to change the name if the fragrance is different, rather than passing it off under the same name as what used to be one of their best selling lines. If I have already bought it and lost money in the past believing it to be the same smell as before, then lots of other people must be doing it as well. Hence why I have put up this post so as to warn others!!

You could write to the botyshop and ask to purchase all thier outstanding white musk from the previous batch.

They'll gladly off load it if they are now aiming at the younger generation.

I love white musk but haven't bought any for a long time. Sometimes things are changed for no reason. Bet the new smell is cheaper to produce

Let's not get sarcastic about this, please. This post is supposed to make others aware that they may be misled into buying something different to what they thought they were buying. There is no outstanding stock from a previous batch as they are now selling two fragrances that smell differently to each other but using the same name for both of them!!

That's what I thought and marketed under the same name as one of their longest and best selling products to get people to buy it!

Loveandlight, thanks for your post. I wondered why my OH wasn't using her last b'day present as much, now I know. Hope she doesn't think I bought hooky stuff!

BTW, I'd just ignore unhelpful comments, rising to their bait is what they want.

    Blimey!

What is wrong with calling them up to buy their excess stock? Nothing.

Actually its not a bad idea, the body shop used to do a cheek and lip tint. It was a little tub of gel and really light in colour and blended well. As I am very fair-skinned it was perfect for me. When they discontinued it I found it at the Cheshire Oaks clearance store and got every single one they had in!! For 50p each too. Still got about 4 left now too.

And why can't they bring back dewberry?!What do they mean by younger customers anyway? I'm 27, is that too old? They're overpriced imo. Hardly Lancome

    YOUNG people!!!!

I agree, they should have called it "New" White Musk. or "New Formula".

    Very annoying.

Fed up with all the emphasis on the young these days.
