Please help with my prepayment meters
Hi all, I'm sure you've all been inundated with questions like this but please bear with me!
I have prepayment meters for both gas and electricity with British Gas and would like to switch, I have no idea how to go about it. I've read the info from Martin and realise I can only stay with BG because of the meters, however, I don't mind not having meters, these were in the house when we bought it.
Can someone please tell me the best way to go forward.
Thank you

British Gas will replace the prepayment meters with credit meters for free if you pass these requirements:BG wrote:An account review and external credit check. You must not be repaying a debt on your meter, or have had a debt at your current/previous address in the last 12 months. You must not have failed a credit check in the last 12 months, and you must have three years of UK address history.
Once you've done that, you'll be free to switch to whatever tariff is cheapest for you.0 -
Thanks for that, I shall get on the old blower.Rubbish at the grocery challenge!0

If you have a debt it is easier to switch suppliers when you have prepayment meters than it is with credit meters. If you do not have a debt it makes no difference.0

If you are prevented from switching supplier despite having PPMs, it must be that you owe the existing supplier(s) money ... I think it's gotta be over £500 per account.
You don't mention any debts owed to the supplier, but if so pay them what you owe them, then you'll be free to switch supplier
Otherwise I don't know why you are being prevented from switching supplier :huh:0 -
Hi, there is no debt on the meters. We pay in advance so I'm not sure how we would amass any debt! It was just what I read on one of the emails martin sent out. Something about if you have prepayment meters you can only switch within the british gas tariffs? Have I read something wrong? Probably have!Rubbish at the grocery challenge!0

Hi
With prepayment meters you can switch just like with a credit meter. Put your consumption for both (BG will advise you if you do not have your annual statement) into a comparison site and then check out what deals there are.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0 -
PPM's will not hinder switching, you have missunderstood something.
YOu should be fine to switch to whomever you wish.:)0 -

There is nothing to stop you switching, even when you keep the meters.
Have a look at the comparison sites.
If possible, use your consumption from your annual statement.
If you don't have it, or have just moved in Ofgem's average consumption is 16,500kWh for gas and 3,300 kWh for electricity so try these, and/or tweak them if you are a high/low user.0 -
My friend wants her prepayment meters for gas and electricity removed and to switch back to paying by bills.
She is not in debt to the company.
The company Npower-has told her, for them to remove the meters. They will charge her £60.00 for each meter. Is this true. Please help. Regards
