Recording from tv onto hard drive

Hello all you wonderful techie people - looking for some advice!
We have been without a video recorder for some months now, we have a freeview box and a DVD player but it doesn't record. We don't watch a great deal of tv but would like the option to record every now and again (you can't watch ER too many times in my opinion!;) ).
What I would like to buy is something that records onto a hard disk. What is it called, can anyone recommend a model, and where should I buy it from?
