rent increase limits?

Can anyone tell me if there is a maximum amount rent can be increased by? Our h/a wants to put our rent up by £15.50 a week which we can't afford anyway but I would like to know what we can do?

what does your contract say in regards to this? and are you still in the fixed term of your AST ?
unfortunately in england, there is no regulation protecting you for unlimited rent increase, and its between tenant and landlord to agree to common terms - so either he risks losing a good tenant if he gets too greedy, or you pay up if you feel that you are underpaying based on market value

We are on an assured tenancy and have lived here since 1984. We've only ever had £5.00 a week increases in line with council properties, never this much. Looking at the forms the ha requested 5.00 again but it's the rent officer who has stated 15.50. All I can think of doing is appeals to both offices and see what happens. I am currently on cont esa but that goes on to income related in Jan 2014. We can't get housing benefit as my oh earns just over the limit.
