Ceilings not "proper" modern ceilings?

I'm not sure you need to go as far as a lower "false ceiling"... plasterboard can be nailed up direct to current ceiling (any worthwhile workman will find the joists and nail it on well enough), and the plaster will add a centimetre at most. If you don't like the coving, all the better.
Yep, best get all the filthy jobs done a.s.a.p., then start enjoying life.
There is a real benefit to doing that though, although I do agree it isn't normally needed.
The extra airtight insulation you get is superb, and may just cover the cost in timber to put up some studding.
I do recommend this approach for loft conversions, it really cuts down on noise levels too.
I have found cut down s/h timber the best, or simply run studding directly screwed to existing joists and board on top.
PS, given what you say about above, don't do anything until they have finished;);)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I'll stick with that, and you can worry about the 10mm differential.
I think Money is likely to be an inches person myself.
But, I am genuinely interested... SCREW - do not nail? Why? (I'm genuinely not sure which I'd opt for with a second ceiling, but I'd certainly nail plasterboard up on a single ceiling... using ribbed nails.
As in "Doesn't do political correctness or metric measurements"....errm...and could make a cheeky comment or two at this point, but I will refrain:rotfl:
Correct...:)0 -
Money, have you thought that perhaps your coving might be the polystyrene type stuff as opposed to proper plaster coving - assuming you've not inspected it closely, of course?
In our current Georgian house there's an extension added in the 1980s that we're in the process of reconfiguring. The coving looked for all intents and purposes to be plaster, but on getting *up close & personal* it turned out to be the delightful polystyrene jobbie that according to DH was popular in the 1970s/80s for those doing things on the cheapIf yours is the same I guess it wouldn't hurt to sacrifice it

There was a comment about screwsVnailing earlier.
It is bad practice today to nail ceiling boards, even with "plasterboard nails"
Ok, less of an issue with upstairs rooms as there is less traffic above, but it's highly likely that some will pop out the plaster filler that is smoothed over the heads ad the roof flexes.
Almost everyone uses plasterboard screws today, they are less prone to do that and given the OP is talking diy and has the choice, he should go that way.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Thank you... I shall mend my ways, and use screws in future. I've just finished a small ceiling under an en-suite (slow leak), and nailed my plasterboard up...0
