TVs are more and more complicated, more transistors, more chips, more pixels, there is far less chance a £500 bought today used daily will be working 100% in 10 years time. The market is over saturated, so brands having to compete on price, so everything now built to a budget with parts from foreign factories to the lowest bidder.

The problem is that the large retailers want the latest range NOW. Whether the TV has been fully-tested for faults pre-launch or not.

They take the risk that enough TVs will last beyond the warranty period. In contrast, the independent retailers tend to be a better bet when buying TVs and such like as the manufacturers supply them with repair kits should a fault be discovered (the big chains are not interested in fitting repair/upgrade kits as, if a fault is found with the range post-launch, they will sell enough of the item to turn a 20% profit, then off-load the rest of the stock to companies who strip the sets & re-use the non-faulty parts to make new TVs sold under brands such as 'Grundig', 'Alba' etc.)

My nephew skip dives (with permission) for broken LCD TVs and fixes them. Usually it is just a dry solder joint or resistor that needs replacing.

Do you mean the TV is less than 3 years old, or that your specific TV is less than 3 years old?

I.e. the TV could have been released 8 years ago, but if you only bought it 3 years ago, would you class that as 3 years old?

I agree that if the TV was only released 3 years ago, that is not a very long time to support it by supplying parts. That's dreadful, in fact!
