That's the first time you've mentioned Steam. Always best to give a full picture to get proper advice.0 -

something like that would be my starting point, upgrade to the gtx650ti - it will say about a PSU upgrade which is fine as i would then further upgrade this to the corsair 550w psu and maybe a upgrade to the 1tb hard drive, this makes the overall price of £629 plus delivery which i belive is £25Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Thanks again for the replies.
Can anyone tell me if this is any good please?

Graphics card is poor and when it comes to gaming that's where your biggest investment needs to be.
You said a budget of £600 - £650 earlier so...
You could take this base system http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-344-OE&groupid=43&catid=2475&subcat=2485
Put the RAM up to 8Gb, add an operating system, change the Primary HDD to 1tb and then change the graphics card to a GTX 660 and you come to £562.02 with a 24 month warranty. You will still need a monitor, keyboard, mouse and either some speakers or a headset for sound though. Cost of the monitor largely depends on its size, or you could output to a television to save on space if it is feasible.
And Overclockers staff are pretty good if you want to get them on the phone and ask them for advice, or perhaps ask on their forums for recommendations and get Overclockers to build you a completely bespoke system.0 -
ive had amd systems in the past and never had a touch on my intel systems even though the processor specs were better, I had many chipset problems, and ati catalyst issues with new games I just don't rate AMD at all at the moment I could have built (on paper) a super system with water cooling and spent most of my money invested in a gfx card aswell, but then reviews of the specs and stuff I wanted just didn't make me sway to AMD again over intel and NVidia based system.
OP one concern of mine is your letting a 11 yr old play rated 18 games.
I ask the same question when it comes to these issues, would you let him watch a rated 18 gore violence verbal violence and graphical sex movie? if not then why would you allow and encourage a rated 18 game to be played.0 -

I've personally never had any issues with AMD. The last nVidia graphics card I owned was a 6600GT. I've had Radeon graphics cards ever since and never encountered any errors or issues. Similarly, I've owned a computer running an AMD CPU since about 1998 and not had any issues either. My current gaming PC is currently running an Intel CPU but my other computer is running an AMD chip.
I've also built AMD based systems for other people and they have had no issues. One such system is running an AMD Phenom II 965 BE which at this point in time is very old by CPU standards and can be picked up for around £50. Because there are few CPU-intensive games it still has no issue with any of the newer games, including the latest Tomb Raider and Crysis titles.
AMD CPUs certainly are not top of the range as they were a decade ago and they are some way behind the best Intel has to offer in that regard but for gaming you don't need the power of an i7, nor really do you actually need the power of an AMD Piledriver chip.
While I don't deny that you may have had negative experiences with AMD hardware in the past I do believe that it would be those unfortunate glitches that occur rather than any sort of norm.0 -
One problem with AMD cpus, is that compared to intel, they usually have more, but slower cores. And most games dont make use of all the core, so they end up being slower for games.
Things are changing however, and modern games are moving more and more into multiple cpus, so new games in the future will start to benefit more0
