Looking for a decent tablet

I'm looking for a tablet primarily to use at my mum's for internet access when I'm staying there. Ideally I'd like to spend as little as possible while still getting something of reasonable quality if at all possible, would stretch up to maybe £150 tops.

Would have to have the following capabilities:
Be able to use Skygo for the football, if not then a streaming site
Able to use 3G as my mum has no broadband (this might be a problem, right?)
Just good basic quick surfing, music listening and e-reader

I think the first two requirements might be a stumbling block to a bargain but aside from that just looking for something giving reliable internet access.

Thanks!

£150 will be something android based. Pretty sure skygo only works on a limited number of tablets so I'd check first. Don't bother with a 3g one, most are expensive and the few that are in budget are crap or not compatible with Skygo, better off either tethering or getting a cheapo mifi dongle with a t mobile PAYG sim card (6 months internet for one off £20) or an ovivo sim (750mb for one off £20)

The nook hd+ is a great tablet for the price, but again not compatible with skygo.

A lot of these streaming sites use flash - my playbook works spot on. Speakers are excellent, screen still holds its own and can install kindle on it.

As games aren't listed as a requirement, I'd say a £70 playbook suits you perfectly, or spend £120 on a refurb nexus 7 2012 model.

    Edit - or £99

Sky go is being expanded on Android, next month I believe, but whether it will work with all devices remains to be seen.
At the moment it's only a couple of android tablets, the Samsung Galaxy tab and the Google nexus..... and the ipad

Even if you can find a sub £150 tablet it does work on I'd be surprised if a 3G connection will be fast enough to stream

Look at the Tesco hudl at £119

If you have clubcard vouchers you can double them up to use against purchase.

It's an excellent value tablet but is only 7" but if that size is OK for her I'd recommend.

+1. You can try the Hudl instore and I got 1 for £9 + £55 worth of Tesco vouchers.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Can you use the Hudl for streaming? Would a refurb nexus around £100 be ok for streaming and would I require a dongle for either without wifi access at my mum's?

If your phone is capable of doing it you can use it so the tablet can connect (tethering its called, depends if your provider allows it) via the phone to the phone networks 3G network.

Would streaming Skygo via 3G not run away with the bandwidth?

Yep, HD will roughly use about 100mb of data every 10 minutes, low quality about 30mb every 10 minutes.

So can be very expensive on 3g or 4g.
