Insurance claim for a damaged laptop

HI

I will be calling my insurer to claim for a damaged laptop tomorrow. Like an idiot, i stepped on the comp damaging the keyboard and monitor.

Presumably, i will need to send the laptop of to the insurer so that they can asess the damage.

My questions are:

1) Do i need to send a receipt to accompany the laptop proving i Own it? It was given to me as a gift when i went to uni so dont have any receipts.

2) Can i remove the internal hard disc, as it contains sensitive data and dont really want to be without my data for days on end and also risk the insurer not getting rid of everything correctly?

It might depend on how much you are claiming for......dont really think they will want the laptop more like just want a quote for the repair or replacement.

No, not usually. Only if they think the claim is dodgy.

No, you cannot. If you claim for it, the laptop becomes the property of the insurance company.. Removing the hard disk is then theft. Transfer the data now, before the insurance comapny inspect it. Most of our inspections companies will sell the hard disk back the customer if they want it.

Had a similar problem -tripped over the dog whilst carrying laptop and the screen broke off. Insurance company didn't even look at it (we kept it for 6 months in case they changed their mind) Asked us for the make and model and sent a replacement as close as possible to the original (which was actually a much better model as laptop was 2 years old)

  • my 2 yr ld poured water on ours.

we had to pay to retrieve the hard drive data ourselves then sent the entire laptop off to the insurance, files and all

im not happy as there were loads of pics of the kids etc although we have copies god only knows where the original laptop is now!

    Thanks.

Who was your insurer. Need to call Halifax later this week. Anyone used then for a claim before? Are they fair?

    cheers

Halifax will use a company called IT Solutions* to inspect the damage. Yes, they are fair, providing you dont lie or exagerate claims.

*Unless they think they can desktop it (get rid of it quickly) in which case they may just give you cash, but it really depends on how long you've been on cover, and how many claims you've had.

Cheers flame. Had cover for a couple of years and never made a claim.

do I have to pay for postage or will they collect it?

I believe they either send a jiffy bag and you take it to the post office, or they send a courier.

Either way it should be pre paid.

Ours was with the Royal Bank of Scotland (can't remember who sorted it out but it was another company not he bank) They should pay for collection and either deliver you a new one or send a cheque minus your excess
