Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 activating earphones

Hi,any ideas as to how to activate the earphone socket on the above.
I thought that when I insert the earphones in the socket the speakers would go silent & the sound would be via the earphone but nothing happens.
Its a new item & I am a new tablet user so please excuse my ignorance in this :-)

I dont have a tab 3 (i have tab 1 wife tab2) but are you pushing the headphone jack in far enough? both the samsung tabs ive just tried work with headphones as soon as the jack is pushed in. I dont know if tab 3 has an option in sound settings for headphones but i would look there.0
