How do I repair a patchy anaemic looking lawn?

After removing a beauiful 'layer' of dog poop from my front lawn (yeah, grim I know), I'm left with a very patchy and ill looking lawn.
How should I go about applying grass seed to the patchy places? Do I need to do anything to the soil, or do I simply scatter at the recommended quantity per square yard etc?
I can sort the lawn colour out at a later date with some weed and feed, but I'd love to get my lawn grass covered.
Anyone in the know?

Update 02 May - I've deleted my advice on lawns from here since there was vitually no response, let alone a single click on 'thanks' after I'd gone to the trouble of typing it out. Oh well, I tried my best to help out.0

Hi,
I too have been trying to improve the lawn at my new house. I agree entirly with George however I would also add the step to airate the ground with one of those spikers you can get from either DIY stores or Argos (argos was the cheapest I found).
I have also used a number of different types of grass seed ranging from the extreemly expensive Canada Green to Bulk Seed and, whilst the Canada Green does grow quicker, there is little need to pay the extra unless you are going to be using the lawn regularly (it is harder wearing). This time, I purchased my seed from Wilkinsons in bulk (you fill as many of their paper bags as you want and weigh it), this was, by far, the cheapest way to purchase it.
I also overseed my lawns each year (only a thin layer) which also helps the thickness.
Hope that helps.0 -
