disputing final/start meter read

have moved into a new house from July 1 and switched gas and electricity to npower. no issues with electricity but have had a huge headache with gas and disputing starting meter read with npower.

npower used a estimated meter read to close my account with SSE at 8992 when I switched over on 14/August. That is way over because on 12/sept when I received the bill the meter was 8755. called both npower and SSE to raise - alot of wrangling with SSE but I managed to get SSE to close my account at 8752 (13/August) instead of the original 8992 so I naturally assumed npower would start the account at 8752. to my horror, npowe amended the start read from 8992 to 8565 which seems to be plucked out of thin air! (FYI, start read when I occupied the premises on 1/July was 8745).

worse still npower has said that was the reading I told them when I clearly said it was 8752!

I have now lodged a complaint and another dispute with npower but not sure how to proceed on from here should npower refuse to amend te start read? any help is much appreciated. thanks!

ps it was unoccupied from July to aug and that's why the gas usage was so low.

The end result you should expect is that the final reading used by SSE is the start reading used by nPower. The suppliers will argue it out amongst themselves what that reading should be, but whatever it is, both have to use the same.

For future reference, if you provide your new supplier with the actual meter reading on the actual switch date the supplier provides you in advance, then you can usually avoid all thes problems :)
