Question about unlocking iphone from vidafone.

Hi. I recently requested an unlock. Anyway it went thru and i got a message from voda saying put in a sim that has never been used and sync the phone to itunes and do some sort of restore. Its sma 4s.

Anyway problem is i dont have a working laptop or computer or itunes so i have put an o2 sim in anyway abd its all working as nirmal. I can make and recieve calls etc. Anyway i was wondering by skipping the step voda have told me to do, will i mess the phone up or encounter any problems? The phone seems to work fine but i havnt done the itunes restore thing??

Thanx.

  • The lock on iPhones is controlled centrally by Apple which is why there is no way to unlock it with software other than jail breaking it.

Certainly in the old days after the operator released the phone by informing Apple then you had to connect the phone to iTunes as that was the way the phone would call back to Apple's servers and find out it was now unlocked.

Of cause now you can do most functions over air rather than having to use iTunes and whilst I cannot say for certain that unlocking has been enabled over air there is little reason why it wouldnt be and assuming your phone was originally network locked and now isnt then it supports that suggestion.

The rest was always unnecessary, or at least I havent done it on any of our iPhones that I've had unlocked

You wont mess the phone up, with the new IOS (in fact i think it was implemented in IOS6) you don't need iTunes anymore to activate the phone, what you have done is the same if you used a PC. Your phone will be fully unlocked now
