CD-RW has stopped reading discs

Options
Hello everyone, i'm after some help. I have a Iomega 7 in 1 CD-RW plugged into my mac - OS 10.2. I have used it in the past to burn discs but now the CD-RW doesn't read the discs and nothing appears on the desktop when a disc is put in the machine. The CR-RW is listed in the Apple system profiler, but when when I put a disc in, I can hear a little whirl and the green light flashes, then everything stops after a few seconds, I have tried various discs, music cds, mac software cds and previous burnt cds.

The describe software is unable to detect the discs aswell. I have uninstalled and reinstalled this software to no avail.

Is the CD-RW faulty? All help will be gladly received, thanks.

If you have tried different disks, retail, CD-R, CD-RW then it sounds like the laser has gone.

Only about £25 for a nice new DVD-RW drive so time for an upgrade.

Have you tried cleaning the laser/electronic eye? I done this with one of my drives with a dry cotton bud if you can see it. It is sometimes just a bit of dust sitting on the laser.
