We recently closed down an old house account that had remained open at our previous address due to the ineptitude of our Gas provider. I would name them, but all my keyboard types when i try and spell the name out is scum...
We had received a bill for over a years gas at this property and a direct debit amount of well over £1500 was attempted from our house account.
We called and challenged them, got an apology, they closed down the account and cancelled the direct debit. We have since had a cheque arrive for the exact amount that they attempted to claim from the account.
What should I do? I have a feeling if I bank this cheque, then the nasty corporate will attempt to come back to us and reclaim the money. Any legal standing on this one?

A supplier who's Accounts Dept. doesn't know the difference between it's Ar*e & Elbow ? - The name doesn't start with an 'n' and end with 'r' by any chance.?
So far as the £1500 cheque goes, my advice is to bank it in an account where it won't get spent, because:
This accounts Dept. at the moment thinks it owes you £1500, for you to return the cheque will only confuse them further - However they will eventually realise the error and make a demand that £1500 be returned, at which point you do send them a letter enclosing a cheque having established a clear paper trail of the overpayment and it's return0
